For most golfers, forgiveness should be Priority #1 when picking a driver. We want to get the ball in play so we have a decent shot into the green.
I’m a low handicap who accepts any and all help off the tee I can get.
I would put any driver on this list in play tomorrow โ they wouldnโt be on this page otherwise.
- ALL these drivers are Neck & Neck with each other.
- Looks, sound, and feel will likely be your deciding factors.
- DO NOT sleep on older models. However, you may have issues getting your preferred specs or with customization.

Launch Monitor #s
Note: I used range balls for this test. I’m always quite a bit longer on the course with my ProVs.
Club Speed | Ball Speed | Carry Distance | Vertical Launch | Peak Height | Spin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
103 mph | 152yds | 252 yds | 11* | 83 ft | 3154 |
I expected the G440 max to be plenty long and forgiving – and I wasn’t disappointed.
I’m not sure I expected to be as long when I missed the sweet spot and as forgiving with some pretty sketchy swings.
Customer Reviews: Average rating of 4.8 out of 17 reviews at pinggolf.com.(1) 13 out of 16 – 81% – would recommend the G440 Max.(Seems low)
- Excellent distance and forgiveness are the high points.
- The one non-5 star customer review was a 1-star (which I sometimes discount) and they complained it didn’t perform as well as their G425.
Read full G440 Max driver review.
Bottom line: The G440 max is my kind of driver. It wanted to put me in the fairway or at least have a decent shot into the green. Not to mention, premium sound and feel, plus looks.
#2 Titleist GT2 (1st Runner Up)
- Sleek & Gorgeous
- Premium Sound & Feel
- Surprisingly Long & Forgiving
- Price
The new GT2 is our surprise new Editor’s Pick for the mid handicapper (or most golfers).
What we like:
- Sleek & Gorgeous Design โ Minimalistic black-on-black aesthetic with a classic-shaped head that looks inviting at address.
- Great Sound & Feel โ Provides a solid, muted impact sensation across a large portion of the face.โ
- Loads of Distance & Forgiveness โ Hot ALL over the face. Delivers impressive distance, even on off-center hits, keeping shots playable and far down the fairway.โ
What we don’t like:
- Nada ( On sale now – price new was steepish)
Read full Titleist GT2 driver review.
Customer Reviews: Titleist doesn’t collect them.
Bottom line โ The Titleist GT2 Driver is so playable, even I can hit it well. Seriously, the most hittable driver I’ve played in years.
#3 Callaway Elyte X
- Explosive Distance & Plenty Forgiveness
- Great Sound & Feel - Solid & Springy
- Elevates the ball easily
- Mediocre cosmetics
- Price
The new Elyte X is a former Editor’s Pick.
What we like:
- Good distance on mishits & Great distance when you catch it.
- A nice slice-corrector. (I put this to the test)
- Good sound and feel. Very springy. The ball jumps off the face.
- Launches and carries plenty high.
What we don’t like:
- Mediocre cosmetics
- Still not in love with $600 drivers.
Launch Monitor #s
Club Speed | Ball Speed | Carry Distance | Vertical Launch | Peak Height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
104 mph | 149 yds | 255 yds | 13* | 103 ft |
I give zero dings on the Elyte X performance.
It is as advertised.
Plenty forgiving.
Plenty long.
Plenty help with launch and carry.
I don’t know why they chose to make an unattractive driver, then price it at $600. – Now $499
Anyway, that’s a little nitpicking. It’s a good driver that delivers on the tee box, where it counts.

An average rating of 4.8/5 from 32 reviews.(1)
Bottom Line: “A” performance in a “C” package at a premium price.
#4 PING G440 SFT
- Loads of Forgiveness & Distance
- High Launch & Carry
- Great Sound & Feel
- Attractive
- Adjustable sole weight
- Nada
I’m halfway through my G440 SFT testing and I strongly believe it belongs right here.
What we like:
- Like the G440 Max, superb forgiveness and distance across the face.
- Great sound and feel. Reminds me more of the G425 than the G430 or the G440 Max.
- Premium cosmetics and looks great at address.
- Launches your golf ball quickly and carries on a nice high trajectory.
What we don’t like:
- Nada.
Launch Monitor #s
Club Speed | Ball Speed | Carry Distance | Total Distance | Vertical Launch | Peak Height |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
108 | 157 | 261 | 281 | *10.7 | 96 ft |
The G440 SFT kept all my decent swing playable and long. I had to swing pretty bad to get a bad result. (I tested this feature more than I liked.)
Even though it’s a draw-biased driver, it doesn’t make you hook – at least, it didn’t make me hook.
The ball flight is a beautiful gentle draw when you catch it square. Or, some version of playable otherwise.
You can always adjust the sole weight to the neutral position if you find the ball drawing too much. I tested this and saw a little less turn from the ball.
Customer Reviews: Average rating of 5 out of 3 reviews at pinggolf.com. (early days)
- They all mention how effective it is at turning slices or pushes into fairways…and long.
Read full G440 SFT driver review.
Bottom line: A superb choice if you fight slices or pushes. Plenty forgiveness and distance on top of that. Plus, it doesn’t look game improvement.
#5 Taylormade Qi35 Max
- Great Sound & Feel
- Plenty Distance & Forgiveness
- High Launch & Peak Height
- Mediocre cosmetics
- Not a major improvement over the Qi10
What we like:
- Premium sound and feel. A slight improvement over the Qi10.
- High launch and carry.
- Ample forgiveness and distance.
What we don’t like:
- Mediocre cosmetics.
- Not much of an improvement over the Qi10.
Launch Monitor #s
Club Speed | Ball Speed | Carry Distance | Vertical Launch | Peak Height | Spin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
99 mph | 154 mph | 255 yds | 12* | 109 ft | 3768 |
I hit the Qi35 Max a LOT on the range during testing. This happens when my driver swing isn’t as reliable as I’d like (which happens too often – though I’m actively working on improving that).
I got ok results, but I felt the Qi35 had more to offer.
Besides, I’m a better driver on the course when I have definitive targets.
Such was the case with the Qi35 Max. Though it didn’t get my best swings during my round, it performed admirable to keep me in play and help me post my best score in a while.
Customer Reviews: Average rating of 4.8 out of 273 reviews at taylormadegolf.com.
- Customers rave about it’s forgiveness, distance, and sound and feel.
Read full Qi35 Max driver review.
Bottom line: Keep your Qi10 Max if you like. If you haven’t upgraded in years, the Qi35 Max is certainly worth looking at.
#6 Taylormade Qi10 Max
- Exceptional Forgiveness & Distance
- Great Sound & Feel
- Premium Looks
- Great Launch & Trajectory
- Not a significant upgrade over Stealth 2 drivers
The Qi10Max is still a solid driver providing you can find it in your specks.
What we like:
- Superb forgiveness and distance across the face.
- Excellent feel and sound.
- Premium cosmetics and looks great at address.
- Launches your golf ball quickly and carries on a nice high trajectory.
What we don’t like:
- Still not in love with $600 drivers.
Our expert tester Wes, put the Qi10 Max through its paces and came away more than impressed. Center contact was heavenly, as you would expect. But, the Qi10 really makes it money when you miss the sweet spot.
Heel and toe strikes lose maybe 5 yards or so – basically, nothing when talking about a driver. Even Wes’s funkiest swings left his drives just off the fairway.
The Qi10 Max delivers on its promise. All we ask for from a driver…especially at $600.
Customer Reviews: Average rating of 4.7 out of 51 reviews at taylormadegolf.com.
- The 4-star reviews didn’t offer any complaints and were complimentary.
- The less than 4-star reviews basically said they haven’t noticed a big improvement over whatever they had before.
Read full Qi10 Max driver review.
Bottom line: Give this driver a try if you struggle with contact off the tee, regardless of handicap. You’ll likely have found your next driver.
#7 Cobra DS-Adapt Max-K
- Premium Sound & Feel
- Loads of Distance & Forgiveness
- No noticeable improvement over last year's model
The new Cobra DS-Adapt Max-K is new to the list.
What we like:
- Premium sound and feel.
- The large, generous clubhead looks extra forgiving at the address.
- Saves all but your worst swings.
- Ample forgiveness and distance
What we donโt like:
- We didn’t find much improvement over last year’s Darkspeed Max driver.
Launch Monitor Data
Club Speed | Ball Speed | Carry Distance | Smash | Peak Height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
100 | 148 | 234 | 1.47 | 63 ft |
I’m swinging at about a 15 handicap with driver right now. So, I may be the perfect tester for the Max-K.
It handled all but my worst swings. A few straight. A few pushes. A few pulls. And a couple of push slices.
Customer Reviews: An average rating of 5/5 with 4 reviews thus far.(1)
Read full DS-Adapt Max-K driver review.
Bottom line: A fine driver in its own right deserving of your attention. We recommend testing the Darkspeed Max also.
#8 Callaway Ai Smoke Max
- Stellar Distance & Forgiveness
- Launches ball high
- Adjustable
- Sound & Feel downgraded from the Paradym
Next up, the Paradym Ai Smoke Max driver.
What we like:
- Crazy hot with a generous sweet spot(s).
- Love the adjustable weight in the sole for dialing in errant drives.
- Sits well at address with a pleasing head shape.
What we donโt like:
- The sound and feel are not as good as the original Paradym drivers.
- Prefer the cosmetics of original Paradyms.
Launch Monitor Data (Wesโs)
Club | Club Speed | Ball Speed | Carry Distance | Total Distance | Vertical Launch | Peak Height |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Ai Smoke Max | 117 | 166 | 269 | 287 | *9.9 | 105 ft |
Our new chief tester, Wes, prefers the Ai Smoke Max over last yearโs Paradym. He thinks the Ai Smoke is better on mishits โ better forgiveness, better feel, and better distance.
I played 2 โ 3 rounds with the Ai Smoke Max, switching it out with the Qi10 Max (and the Darkspeeds โ reviews coming soon).
I began by pull-hooking the Smoke Max off the planet. Once I sequenced my swing better and moved the sole weight just past neutral toward fade, I began blistering drives and ending up with playable misses โ the occasional push and pull.
Itโs not a significant upgrade over the Paradym from last year, but it is an upgrade.
Read full Paradym AI Smoke Max driver review.
Customer Reviews: 100% of reviewers would recommend to a friend. It has an average rating of 4.9 / 5 with 16 recorded reviews.(1)
Bottom line: An excellent driver worthy of testing. Keep your Paradym if you like it.
FAQs
How To Choose a driver suitable for beginners and high handicaps
Thereโs one performance characteristic beginners and high handicaps should place as their top priority when choosing their best driverโฆForgiveness
- Not distance
- Not shaping shots
- Not trajectory (though this plays a part in forgiveness)
Golf is a miserable game if you are constantly hitting from the junk or re-teeing because of lost golf balls. Even the best drivers for high handicappers wonโt prevent this for you 100%, but there is help out there. Why not take advantage of it?
Iโm more of a low-handicap and I still play plenty from the junk and lose more golf balls from the tee than Iโd like to admit. Forgiveness is definitely a factor when Iโm selecting a driver.
Which Brand of Golf Driver Should I Choose?
All the major brands produce excellent drivers for beginners and every handicap level. Titleist used to be the exception but theyโve been producing drivers for beginners and handicap golfers for a few years now.
I personally trust the major brands such as Taylormade, Callaway, Titleist, Ping, etc. They all have a long-established track record of quality clubs.
Callaway produced the best drivers for beginners and all handicaps for a long time, then Taylormade came along around 2006-2007 and started producing the best drivers in the game. I think itโs a real competition again with Callaway coming on strong
I played Callaway for years and Iโm now playing Taylormade. I wager I could easily choose another brand that fits my eye and be fine. All comes down to preference in the end.
What degree driver should beginners use?
Higher loft = more forgiveness. The best drivers for beginners will have lofts of 11,12, or 13 degrees for higher launch. Especially since many beginners or handicap golfers hit down on their drivers creating extra spin and inconsistent launch angle.
With modern driver design, it also equals more distance- up to a point.
Higher loft = increased backspin and decreased sidespin. This makes it a touch harder to slice your drives out of play.
Of course, increased loft also means getting the golf ball airborne easier. Which rememberโฆis job one for a beginner or high handicap golfers driver.
How To Pick The Best Shaft For Your Driver
In generalโฆ
Most beginners and high-handicappers have slower swing speeds, so should be looking for a little more flex.
Thereโs no governing body that monitors the accuracy of the stated flex on a given shaft, so hereโs where a little testing will help.
With time and testing, youโll learn the equipment of the different manufacturers and you will get a sense of what works for you.
In times past you also had to choose between a metal and a graphite shaft. Metal shafted drivers are pretty much gone forever and youโd be hard-pressed to find a driver without a graphite shaft.
**In my review of mid-handicap drivers I give a little better treatment of swing-speed and shaft options.
- A weaker flex shaft will favor slower swing speed
- A stiffer flex shaft will favor faster swing speed
Hereโs my brief guide on swing speed and shaft flex. The last two will apply to the beginner or high handicapperโฆusually.
- Swing your driver over 105 mph? You can probably start thinking about an X-stiff shaft.
- Swing your driver in the 95 โ 105 mph range? A stock stiff shaft will likely work fine for you.
- Swing your driver 80 โ 90ish mph? A regular shaft is likely your best bet.
- Swing your driver < 80 mph? A Senior flex shaft should do the trick.
Clubhead speed is only one of the factors used to decide which shaft you should be using. This is a very basic and general guide to shaft selection, but I think this is more than adequate for the beginner or high-handicap golfer.
Should a Beginner get a Professional Fitting for their driver?
The vast, vast, vast majority of recreational golfers do NOT get a professional fittingโฆand enjoy the game just fine.
Here are my thoughts: Not gospel, by any means and feel free to disagree.
- TRUE BEGINNER: DO NOT get fit for clubs. DO get lessonsโ>Buy something with a regular shaft off the rack. You have no idea what you are doing in your golf swing and the swing you have now is not the swing you need to get fit for.
- HIGH HANDICAPPER (Been playing for a couple or few years and want to get a lot better): Get Lessons 1st!
- HIGH HANDICAPPER (Been playing for a while and just looking for a little help and more enjoyment from playing): Donโt get fit.
Iโm competitive and always looking to improve, so I got fit for my driver and my irons years ago.
Our Verdict
Our new pick for the most forgiving driver is the Ping G440 Max.
- It works hard to turn bad swings into playable driver.
- Generous sweet spot with excellent distance on mishits.
- High launch and carry.
- Premium looks and feel.
My #1 suggestion is to test before you buy. Either at your local golf store or take advantage of Global Golfโs Utry trial program. I use it and recommend it.
