This is our Taylormade Qi4D Max driver review.

I’m an avid golfer, 6ish handicap on my way to a 2 (used to be a 5.3), and frequent tester of golf equipment since 2015.

Quick Take: The Qi4D Max delivers longer, straighter drives on your mishits. Has explosive distance when you catch it.

It feels great most anywhere you hit it on the face and has improved head shape and cosmetics over last year’s Qi35 Max.

Spending ~$650 for a single club still doesn’t sit great with me, but if you’re going to spend it anyway, the Qi4D Max is worth a look.

Best For

Any golfer looking for an easier time off the tee.

Considerations

$649 is still a lot of money for one club.

Verdict

The Qi4D Max came ready to play out of the box for me.

It made the best out of my rusty swing and delivered long playable drives even when I didn’t deserve them.

The new head shape and cosmetics frame the ball much better for my eyes.

It delivers for those of us who need help getting off the tee box in good shape.

What Makes the Qi4D Max Driver Different?

The Qi4D Max is TaylorMade‘s first modern adjustable non-titanium driver. A forged 7075 aluminum collar provides the adjustability and head stability while keeping mass available for ball speed.

The face is a 60x Carbon Twist Face, which TaylorMade states keeps heel and toe strikes more online and saves weight relative to a titanium face. A revised roll radius is intended to tighten spin variance between high-face and low-face contact.

For adjustability, the driver uses two Trajectory Adjustment System (TAS) weights of 13g and 4g, plus a 4° loft sleeve covering loft, lie, and face angle.

It carries over two existing TaylorMade technologies: a cut-through Speed Pocket to protect ball speed on low-face strikes, and multimaterial construction to position mass for speed and stability.

The head is a 460cc Max-profile shape positioned for high launch and mid spin.

My Experience with the Qi4D Max Driver

Before I hit a shot, I thought the Qi4D was an improvement over the Qi35 Max.

The Qi35 Max is a fine club, no doubt, but I didn’t get along great with it. The head shape and cosmetics turned me off immediately. I had to work hard to get used to looking at it before it delivered for me.

Not so with the Qi4D. They went back to a more classic head shape. More aerodynamic or less boxy or something. I just know I instantly felt comfortable with it.

They improved the graphics too. Not a ton, but enough.

Then…

Straight to the course and bombed down the center out of the gate. So, not a bad first impression. (Same thing on the second drive, by the way)

No range. No warmup.

My first impressions were fulfilled throughout the round. Including on the last hole – where I occassionally let up and make mistakes.

Not so this time. Into a two-club wind, I hit a beautimous mid-high tight draw down the middle about 255 yards.

Felt great, looked great. My opinion on the Qi4D was sealed.

Bottom line: It does what you want a max-forgiveness driver to do and it does it well. I’m not saying you have to spend $650+ for a good driver, but if you are, give the Qi4D a look.

Who Should Play the Qi4D Max Driver?

Taylormade Qi4D Max Driver and headcover

ANY golfer who wants less stress off the tee box.

Low handicaps: (Yes) Unless you are elite off the tee. You’re likely looking for lower spin and lower trajectory if that’s the case.
Mid handicaps: (OH Yes) Get your hands on it and give it a try.
High handicaps: (Yes) See above.

What Are the Best Alternatives to the Qi4D Max Driver?

Three strong alternatives with similar forgiveness and distance:

PING G440 Max – Still a HECK of a driver. A massive help to those of us who need it.

Callaway Quantum Max – An upgrade over the Qi35 Max, at least for me. In every category, most importantly, playability.

Titleist GT2 – An elite driver unexpectedly forgiving and as long or longer than any.

Customer Reviews

Overall rating of 4.9 / 5 with 118 reviews in. 98% of reviewers recommend the Qi4D driver. (1)

Across these reviews, the Qi4D Max driver gets near-universal praise for forgiveness on mishits, added distance (often 10-50 yards over previous drivers), and tighter dispersion—with seniors and higher handicappers especially calling out how easy it is to swing and keep in the fairway.

Several buyers upgraded from recent TaylorMade models (Qi10, Stealth 2, Qi 35 Max) and say the Qi4D is a clear step up in feel, sound, and control. T

he oversized head also gets repeated mentions for inspiring confidence at address.

Only real gripe: one reviewer noted the black finish marks up and chips easily when swapping shafts.

Final Verdict

The Qi4D delivers everything I want off the tee.

  • Low stress
  • Longer drives
  • Correction for my mishits.
  • Great sound and feel
  • Frames the ball beautifully at address.

Should you upgrade if you own the Qi35 Max?
No, not if you like it and hit it well.

My #1 suggestion for any new club purchase – get your hands on it and hit it before you buy.
