This is our Ping G440 Max driver review.

I’m an avid golfer, a 7ish handicap on my way to a 2 (been a 5.6) and frequent tester of golf clubs and equipment since 2015.

Bag Appeal: (4) The G440 Max has an attractive profile and frames the ball well at address. The crown isn’t much to look at, but it isn’t bad. Sole graphics and design are well done and pop.

Face height is much lower than I’m used to seeing in modern drivers. Did not affect play in the least.

Sound/ Feel: (4) Reminds me of the G430. Solid and muted, the way I like it. Doesn’t feel as springy as the G425, but the ball gets out there plenty…don’t worry.

Forgiveness: (5) I had to swing pretty bad to get a bad result and I only got a couple of those. I didn’t need to hit the sweet spot for good drives, but I got a definite boost when I did.

Distance: (5) Plenty, and over a large portion of the face. The exact reason you get this driver. You won’t be disappointed.

Flight / Launch: (5) Well struck shots got all the height I needed without ballooning.

I have a tendency to slide toward the target on my driver swings, which delofts the driver and makes the ball launch lower with lower peak height.  

Even my lower drives went plenty high and got out there.

If you’re coming from an older driver, the performance jump will be significant.

My Experience with The G440 Max

I have a very nice mat and a nice net at home for when my driving range is closed or for sheer convenience.

Unfortunately, I don’t hit driver well off my mat and into my net. Irons…no problem.

It’s a mental thing. My swing speed is about 8 mph slower and my contact isn’t great, either.

I never hold this against any driver I’m testing.

So, I had no choice because of our wet weather but to hit off my mat to get at least something of an impression of the G440 Max.

No surprise – for me – the numbers were fairly terrible, but the driver felt good.

The next test was on the course. I drive better during play, than on the range. Must be something about having definitive targets and knowing I only have one crack at it.

My round with the G440 Max was no exception.

First drive first swing of the day went 298 yards right of the fairway in a no-problem lie. And, mostly carry too. (As I said above, we played in very wet conditions).

I averaged 271 yards with well-struck shots for the round. My shortest was 254 yards into the wind. (Remember, basically all carry)

And, we’re not talking about super great swings. I swung well, but nothing to write home about.

Naturally my buddies were curious about the G440 Max, so I passed it around my foursome during the round. Everyone agreed. You don’t really need to “catch” the G440 Max to get pretty serious distance.

Next, I took the G440 Max to the range and put it on my launch monitor. It was my normal mixed bag of ok and horrible driving. The numbers from that session are above.

Bottom line: Great sound and feel. Ample forgiveness. Loaded with distance. Plus, an adjustable sole weight to dial in shot shape and trajectory.

Who Should Play the Ping G440 Max Driver?

The Ping G440 Max driver works for golfers at all skill levels who want more distance and playable drives.

Low, mid, and high handicappers all benefit from its forgiveness, launch help, and distance—unless you specifically need low-spin, low-launch performance.

Any golfer that wants more long and playable drives.

Low handicaps (Yes) I’m one – though not great off the tee, mind you – but, I’d play this driver in an instant. There’s nothing not to like about it unless you require low spin, low launch, or some such.
Mid handicaps (Yes) I love this driver for you. It does all the things you need – forgiveness, help with launch, tons of help with distance, movable sole weight to dial in more playable drivers.
High handicaps (Yes) See above.

What Are the Best Alternatives to the Ping G440 Max Driver?

Three top game improvement drivers match the G440 Max’s performance profile:

• Titleist GT2 ($649) – Explosive distance with a generous sweet spot and beautiful ball flight.
• Callaway Elyte X ($599) – Exceptional playability with adjustable sole weight like the G440 Max.
• Cobra DS Adapt Max K ($549) – Loaded with game improvement tech at a lower price point.

Titleist GT2 – My current most favorite and has been in my bag most of 2025. Explosive distance, a generous sweet spot, and beautiful ball flight. Plus, it’s a gorgeous club.

Callaway Elyte X – Really…really works to keep your drives playable. Add to that a springy face with tons of distance potential. Also, has an adjustable sole weight like the G440 Max.

Cobra DS Adapt Max K – Again, a great driver loaded with all the game improvement tech as the first two.

Final Verdict

The G440 Max is a great driver for most golfers.

It looks sleek and “player”, but at the same time, it doesn’t intimidate.

• It’s attractive and frames the ball well at address.
• It’s got a generous sweet spot and explosive distance.
• It launches the ball plenty high.
• An adjustable sole weight let’s you dial in your ball flight even more for more playable drives.

Should you upgrade if you own the G430 Max?
Nope, unless you hate your G430 Max.

My #1 suggestion is to test it before you buy it.
