Callaway Elyte X Driver Review: A Forgiving, Slice-Taming Driver

This is our Callaway Elyte X driver review.

I’m an avid golfer, a 7ish handicap on my way to a 2 (been a 5.6) and frequent tester of golf clubs and equipment since 2015.

I did a ton of testing with the Elyte X, Elyte Triple Diamond Max, plus other drivers on the range. Then, I took it out for a round of golf.

How Does the Callaway Elyte X Driver Perform?

The Callaway Elyte X driver excels at forgiveness with springy performance over a large portion of the face. The draw bias genuinely works—turning out-to-in swings into fairway-finding fades instead of slices.

Distance is excellent, launch is high with good carry, and sound/feel are solid and springy—exactly what you want at impact. The ball jumps off the face on good contact.

This is Callaway’s most forgiving Elyte model. Performance gets full marks.

Bag Appeal: (3) This is not an attractive driver to me. Unfortunately for the Elyte X, I tested it next to the Triple Diamond Max – a quite attractive driver.

The crown is carbon weave and brownish/gray. It reminds me of last years AI Smoke lineup. But, it has a mat finish instead of a gloss finish.

Sole graphics are similar to other Elyte drivers which is similar to the Epic drivers from a few seasons ago.

Sound/ Feel: (4) Very nice. Solid, springy, muted. Just the way I like it. I really felt the ball jumping off the face – quite satisfying.

Forgiveness: (5) This is why you buy the Elyte X. You can’t swing crazy, but you can get away with more than you deserve.

It’s springy over a large part of the face. It really tamed my out-to-in swings and turned them into fairway-finding fades instead of rough or OB finding slices.

Distance: (5) Plenty. You want help with distnance? Well, you got help with distance from the Elyte X.

Flight / Launch: (5) It wants to go high and it wants to go right to left (for right handers). As mentioned above, I love that it turned my slices into beautiful fades. I don’t want to live there, but it’s nice to have when you need it.

What Makes the Callaway Elyte X Driver Different?

My Experience with The Callaway X Driver

I hit beaucoup drives over four days of testing the Elyte X—plenty of swings to get a solid feel for how it performs.

Like most of my driver testing over the last couple of years, my swing was a mixed bag.

I had to work a little harder than I’d like to sync up with the Elyte X, especially early on. But once I got a few good ones off the center, I started to see what it’s capable of.

On the course is where it got interesting.

That day I was battling a two-way miss, with the occasional pure one down the middle. Mid-round, my path started to shift out-to-in, and the Elyte X actually turned those swings into high, playable fades that held the fairway.

But—and this is key—I also had a few pull-hook moves show up. Those are deadly with any driver, but especially with one that’s draw-biased. Even so, the Elyte X bailed me out more than once. Not perfect, but better than expected.

My take?
If you fight a hook, this probably isn’t your club.
But if you fight a slice? Grab this puppy with both hands.

Who Should Play the Callaway Elyte X Driver?

The Callaway Elyte X driver is designed for mid-to-high handicappers (Callaway says 0-30+ handicaps) who fight a slice and need maximum forgiveness.

Low handicappers rarely want draw-bias drivers, but it’s worth testing if getting off the tee is a weakness. If you fight a hook, avoid this driver—the draw bias will make it worse.

Low handicaps: (Maybe) Callaway says the Elyte X is for 0-30+ handicaps. I have my doubts. Most low handicaps I know don’t like looking down at a draw bias driver. But, you never know. Worth a test if getting of the tee box is a weakness.
Mid handicaps: (Yes) This driver will straighten out a slice to some degree. Plus, its more than long enough and forgiving enough. Certainly worth a test.
High handicaps: (Yep) A great option if you’ve got even average swing speed. The Max Fast may be a better option otherwise.

What Are the Best Alternatives to the Callaway Elyte X Driver?

Three alternatives with similar forgiveness and anti-slice profiles:

Taylormade Qi Max – Has the same playing profile aimed at the same player. Worth a test, especially since prices have dropped so much.

Final Verdict

The Callaway Elyte X does what it’s supposed to do—and it does it well.

It launches high, feels solid, and offers real forgiveness across the face.

If you fight a slice and want to keep the ball in play more often, this driver will help. I saw it myself during testing.

My out-to-in swings stayed in the fairway as playable fades, where other drivers might’ve sent them into the trees or worse.

• Performance isn’t the issue here. The sound, feel, launch, distance—all legit. Where I ding it is the cosmetics (just not my taste) and the $599 price tag. That’s a lot of money for a driver targeted at beginners and high handicaps, especially when there are solid options from last year for a few hundred less.

Should you upgrade? Not if you’re hitting your current driver well.
