Takomo 201T MKII Irons Review – Premium Player Irons – Less Than Half the Price

This is Golfer Geeks’ Takomo 201T MKII irons review.

I’m an avid golfer, 6ish handicap (on my way to a 2), and frequent tester of golf gear since 2015.

In this review of Takomo 201T MKII irons, I discuss my experience with the clubs, any unique features and benefits, customer reviews, and potential recommendations. I also tell you who I think should be playing them and why.

Bag Appeal: (4.5) Gorgeous clubs. Sleek, minimal design. Compact heads with thin – but, not too thin – topline and sole. A little bit of intimidation going on once you hit 6-iron and lower.

Very “player” look.

Sound/ Feel: (4) Solid and a little soft at impact. Not top of the line, but not far off

Forgiveness: (5) Just a splash. You’ve got a little room for minor mishits, but not much. They’re never harsh.

Distance: (4.5) As long as any in this category. Maybe half a club long.

Flight / Launch: (5) You can go high, low, or anything in between. Up to you. Shaping and flighting the ball are all in your hands.

Value: (5) Outstanding. ~$97/club. Excellent performance per dollar.

My Experience with the 201T MKIIs

I hit a bunch of solid shots in my first round, but pulled most of them. It’s a sequence issue I’m working on.

My second round was decidedly better. I got off quite a few good shots and experienced what the 201Ts had to offer.

I’m fairly confident they’re about half a club longer than I’d expect from their lofts – which are standard by and large.

I was able to flight the ball down with relative ease. I only intentionally work the ball from right to left and they handled that fine.

My range sessions went about the same way. The first one was on mats – not my favorite – and didn’t produce anything memorable or give me a true feel for the 201Ts.

The second session was an extended one on grass and I was able to relax into the session and get a good feel through the set

Bottom line: the 201T MKIIs are player clubs that play like player clubs. There’s some help for minor mishits, but that’s it. Minor help.

Who Should Play Takomo 201T MKII Irons?

I like them for accomplished ball strikers. You need to be familiar with the sweet spot and be able to hit it often to get what you need out of the 201Ts.

Low handicaps (Yes): You’re only hesitation might be limited shaft selection from Takomo.
Mid handicaps (No): You’ve got better options like the 201 MKIIs .
High handicaps (No): You’ve got better Takomo options with the 101 MKIIs.

Best Alternatives to Takomo 201T MKII Irons

All these irons cost double or more than the 201Ts. But, you do get more premium performance and feel from them.

Mizuno Pro S1 Irons – Top of the category – top of the line player irons. They have and do everything…for a price.

Ping i240 irons – The best Ping player irons I’ve tested. About a notch below the Mizuno Pro S1s. Nice sound and feel. Easy launch. Ample distance. For a price.

Taylormade P-7CB irons – One of my favorite Taylormades of the last few years. Shame they’re not more popular. They do it all while looking gorgeous. Probably going away soon. Get them while you can.
