This is Golfer Geeks’ review of the best Takomo irons.
I’m an avid golfer, a 6.5 handicap with a mid-high draw, and a frequent tester of golf clubs and equipment since 2015. I write every review on this site myself.
I’ve played all five of Takomo’s current iron sets: the 101 MKII, 201 MKII, 201T MKII, 301 CB and 301 MB. Each one got range sessions, rounds on the course and time on a launch monitor. Following is my ranking of each and who it best serves.
Takomo makes five iron sets, and every one I tested scored between 4.4 and 4.7 out of 5. Match the set to your handicap and you’ll get a lot of iron for the money.
- Best for beginners and high handicaps: Takomo 101 MKII (4.7). Forgiving, launches high, and sounds and feels better than most game improvement irons.
- Best player cavity back: Takomo 301 CB (4.5). My favorite player irons since the Mizuno Pro S1s.
- Best for low handicaps who want a little help: Takomo 201T MKII (4.5). A player’s look with a little room for minor mishits.
- Best for about a 12 handicap down to 5: Takomo 201 MKII (4.5). Player distance irons with plenty of forgiveness and launch.
- Best blade: Takomo 301 MB (4.4). Beautiful and precise, but shorter than most irons I test.

Takomo Iron Reviews
Takomo 101 MKII Irons (Best for Beginners and High Handicaps)
Takomo 101 MKIIs were a welcome surprise to me.
They’ve improved the overall look and feel of the clubs and I can’t say enough about how well they perform vs. how much they cost.
They’ve got no competition when it comes to value.

I love Takomo 101 MKIIs for new golfers and high handicappers, in general. Mid handicappers, don’t feel left out. You can definitely play these too.
- We recommend them for beginners to 15ish handicaps.
What we like:
- Great cosmetics – clean and minimal. Clubheads are beefy and look forgiving. But, they aren’t long heel to toe.
- Launch plenty high. Have plenty forgiveness. Go plenty far.
- Crazy value for the performance.
What we don’t like:
- Nothing – Nada – Zilch

Note: I hit mid and upper 180s on a few swings, but 176 is what I’m comfortable pulling this club for.
There’s no reason not to take a look at the 101 MKIIs unless you hate looking at them. Honestly, their performance is more than good enough and no clubs I’ve tested can beat this price at the moment.

Bottom line: All the club you need if you’re just starting the game or are a high handicapper in need of your next set.
Takomo 301 CB Irons (Best Player Cavity Back)
The Takomo 301 CBs are premium player cavity backs at a bargain price. Compact heads, soft feel, and plenty of control over flight and shape.
They’ve got me considering a change to my everyday set. And, I don’t say that often.
Takomo 301 CB Irons

What we like:
- Beautiful at address without looking intimidating.
- Clear feedback without harsh feel.
- Easy to flight and shape.
- Excellent value.
What we don’t like:
- Nothing for their intended player. They reward precise contact.
7-Iron Launch Monitor Data
My usual slightly toed strike left me 2–4 yards short. Center contact gave me my distance.
On the course, I stopped trying to stretch yardages and hit plenty of shots close. A few short irons even spun back 5–7 yards. More than I’m used to.

Bottom line: Best suited to scratch through 5ish handicaps who value shot-making and feel. This 6.5 handicapper is tempted, too.
Takomo 201T MKII Irons (Best for Low Handicaps Who Want a Little Help)
Surprisingly good irons, especially when you account for their bargain price.
They look premium. They play premium. They cost bargain-basement.

Takomo 201T MK IIs were a very pleasant surprise for me. They impress as soon as you open the box. (They give you a hat and towel, by the way)
The heads are the perfect shape and the perfect size. Compact, but not intimidating.
They play exactly how you want a low handicap iron to play. Plus, their hollow body construction gives you a little more margin for error – not much more, but more.
Sound and feel are good enough to compete with the big boys. You would have no trouble showing these off to your buddies. And, you give up nothing in performance.

Customer Reviews: An average rating of 4.9 out of 5 with 98 reviews in. Reviewers praise the quality of the irons, the online fitting tool, the help with distance, and the added forgiveness.
Bottom line: Tons of performance, elegant styling, and killer price. Shaft options limited to KBS are the only knock I have on them.
Takomo 201 MKII Irons (Best for About a 12 Handicap Down to 5)
The Takomo 201 MKIIs deliver the distance, forgiveness, and shot-making you expect from premium player distance irons. For a whole lot less money.
They look the part, too.

What we like:
- Attractive heads that don’t look difficult to hit.

- Can flight them down and work them both ways.
- Helpful forgiveness when contact wanders.
- Excellent performance for the money.
What we don’t like:
- Fewer shaft and grip choices than the major brands.

My first round told me they could handle mishits. My swing wasn’t good enough to learn much else.
The second round was different. Better contact let me appreciate the feel, extra distance, and control.
Even the pitching wedge went about half a club farther than my everyday wedge with the same loft.

Bottom line: Well worth a look for 12ish handicaps and better who want distance and forgiveness without giving up shot-making.
Takomo 301 MB Irons (Best Blade)
The Takomo 301 MBs are the best value blades I’ve tested. Gorgeous compact heads, superb sound and feel, and all the shot-making ability you could want.
One catch…you need to be OK giving up some distance.
Takomo 301 MB Irons
- ✓Among the best looking irons on the market
- ✓Superb quality and craftsmanship.
- ✓Heavenly sound and feel.
- ✓Accurate and consistent.
- ✓Insanely good price.
- ✕Shorter than most player irons we’ve tested.

What we like:
- Beautiful compact heads with minimal cosmetics.
- Soft, solid feel. Even my mishits weren’t harsh.
- Can play any shot your skill allows.
- Outstanding value.
What we don’t like:
- Consistently 3–7 yards shorter than my normal distances, even on seemingly solid contact.
7-Iron Launch Monitor Data
The MBs frustrated me on the range and won me over on the course.
I kept chasing my usual yardages during testing. But, once I accepted taking more club, I really enjoyed their accuracy and feel.

Bottom line: Excellent blades for precise ball strikers, especially 2 handicaps and better, who already have all the distance they need. If that’s you, these deserve a serious look.
Are Takomo Irons Good?
Takomo irons are good: all five sets I tested scored between 4.4 and 4.7 out of 5, and each one scored a 5+ for value.
What they share is more useful than the scores. Every set launched well, and each scored a 5 for launch and flight. The 101 MKII has better sound and feel than most game improvement irons, and the 301 MB is one of the softer irons I’ve hit in a while.
They aren’t flawless. The 101 MKII, 201 MKII and 201T MKII all come with limited shaft and grip options, which matters more to a better player than to a beginner. The 301 MB is short, and the 301 CB gives you no extra distance on a miss.
So the brand isn’t the question. The question is which set fits your game, which is the next section.
Where Are Takomo Irons Made?
Takomo is a Finnish company. Its irons are “Designed in Finland,” according to Takomo, and the company is headquartered in Turku with a US office in Red Oak, Texas. Takomo’s website doesn’t say where the clubs themselves are manufactured, so I won’t guess.
Who Should Use Which Takomo Irons?
Pick by handicap first, then by how much help you want on a miss. Takomo’s own handicap ranges, from each product page on takomogolf.com, are in brackets.
- 101 MKII: beginners up to about a 15 handicap. Mid handicaps can play them, but around a 10 I’d look at the 201s. (Takomo: 15 to 40+)
- 201 MKII: about a 12 handicap down to 5. Any low handicap can play them. (Takomo: 5 to 25)
- 201T MKII: about a 5 handicap to plus handicaps. Not for mid handicaps. (Takomo: 0 to 15)
- 301 CB: scratch to 5 handicaps, which matches Takomo’s guidance. (Takomo: 0 to 5)
- 301 MB: about a 2 handicap and better, which matches Takomo’s guidance. (Takomo: 0 to 2 or better)
If you’re new to golf or a high handicap, the 101 MKII is the easy answer. It gives you all the help with launch, forgiveness and distance you could ask for, and it will take you deep into the mid handicaps.
Between about a 12 and a 5, the 201 MKII gives you a player’s look with plenty of help. Once you hit the center often, the 201T MKII trades some of that help for a smaller head and more control.
The two 301s are for skilled ball strikers. The CB has a touch more forgiveness and distance than the MB, and the MB asks you to accept less distance in exchange for feel and precision.

Best Takomo Irons FAQ
What are the best Takomo irons?
The best Takomo irons depend on your handicap, and Takomo makes a set for every one.
- Beginners and high handicaps: 101 MKII
- About 12 down to 5: 201 MKII
- 5 and better, wanting a little help: 201T MKII
- Scratch to 5: 301 CB
- About 2 and better: 301 MB
Are Takomo irons forged?
Only the Takomo 301 CB and 301 MB irons are forged. Takomo lists both as “One Piece Forged S20C Carbon Steel.” The 101 MKII has a “431 cast body,” and the 201 MKII and 201T MKII have a “17-4 cast body in all lofts,” with hollow-body designs.
Are Takomo 101 irons blades?
Takomo 101 MKII irons aren’t blades. Takomo describes the 101 MKII as a hollow-body game improvement iron, and in Golfer Geeks testing it was the most forgiving set of the five. Takomo’s only blade is the 301 MB.
Which Takomo irons are the most forgiving?
The Takomo 101 MKII is the most forgiving Takomo iron set. It’s the set to start with for beginners and high handicaps, and in Golfer Geeks testing it still returned 80 to 90 percent of the shot from mediocre swings.
Are Takomo irons short?
Only the Takomo 301 MB, in Golfer Geeks testing. It came up 3 to 7 yards short of standard distances on solid-feeling contact. The 201 MKII and 201T MKII both played about half a club longer than their lofts suggest, and the 301 CB went as far as it was hit.
Final Verdict
All five Takomo iron sets I tested are good irons, and each one scored a 5+ for value. The 101 MKII is the easy pick for beginners and high handicaps, the 201 MKII and 201T MKII cover the player distance range, and the 301 CB and 301 MB are for skilled ball strikers.
My #1 suggestion is to match the set to your handicap before you buy.
