This is Golfer Geeks’ Takomo 201 MKII irons review.
I’m an avid golfer, 6ish handicap (on my way to a 2), and frequent tester of golf gear since 2015.
Quick Take: Takomo 201 MKII irons perform as well as player distance irons from top manufacturers but for considerably less money.
- Nice sound and feel.
- Launch high with plenty of pop.
- Ample forgiveness and plenty of playability.
- Shape them anyway your skill allows.
A more than solid set of player distance irons and at a killer price.
Well done, Takomo.

Verdict
You will not kick Takoma 201 MKII irons out of bed for performance, looks, or price.
They do all the things the best player distance irons on the market do while saving you a whole lot of money in the process.
You’ll give up some shaft and grip options. But, what they have is more than playable for most of us.
Oh, they’re knock-out gorgeous.
Certainly worth a look if you’re in the market and don’t mind screaming deals.

How Do Takomo 201 MKII Irons Perform?
Category | Grade |
|---|---|
Looks | 4.5 |
Sound/Feel | 4 |
Distance | 4.5 |
Forgiveness | 5 |
Flight/Playability | 5 |
Value | 5 |
Bag Appeal: (4.5) Gorgeous clubs. I like minimal and elegant and 201 MKIIs deliver in spades. The heads are compact, but not intimidating. The topline and sole are a little thicker, as you would expect.
Sound/ Feel: (4) Very nice. Soft and solid. Not the best, but equal to many clubs at twice or more the price.
Forgiveness: (5) Plenty. Center contact is great, but you get a lot out of slight misses. I hit a number of toe and toe/thin shots and ended up a halfish club short.
Distance: (4.5) Plenty long. Lofts are from 0 – 3 degrees strong, but I think they’re maybe a half a club longer than that.
Flight / Launch: (5) Default high, but can easily flight them down. Shape them any way your skill allows.
Value: (5) Outstanding. ~$93/club. Excellent performance per dollar.
My Experience with the 201 MKIIs

I’ve got two rounds, a couple range sessions and a launch monitor session in the books with the 201 MKIIs.
The first round was nothing to write home about because my game was nothing to write home about.
I had ample Winter rust to work out plus I’m working on a new swing pattern and setup from my instructor.
I hit a bunch of bad shots. A bunch of mediocre shots. Plus, way too few good shots.
I didn’t get a feel for them. I knew they were forgiving. I figured they’d be long. But I couldn’t hit shots.
Second round = completely different story.
I was pretty much on it for the round. Driving, chipping, putting, and irons (for the most part).
I got to experience the MKIIs superb sound and feel.
I got to experience their explosive distance.
I got to do some shot making.
I got to experience their proper ball flight.
Now I know the MKIIs. They’re up there with the best player distance irons on the market.
They’re between 0 – 3 degrees stronger than my regular set. (Loft gapping isn’t standard through the set for the MKIIs).
But, they’re about half a club longer per club. So, the 46* pitching wedge is about half a club or so longer than my 46* Hogan Icon iron due to the game improvement technology of the 201 MKIIs.
Bottom line: The 201 MKIIs are a great looking set of irons with equal performance at the best price on the market.
Who Should Play Takomo 201 MKII Irons?

I like them for better mid handicaps down to any low handicap that wants to play them.
Low handicaps (Yes): Any low handicap can play them. The topline and sole are a bit thick for the more discerning elite low handicap’s eyes (I imagine).
Mid handicaps (Yes, if): I like them for 12ish handicaps and lower.
High handicaps (No): You’ve got better Takomo options with the 101 MKIIs.
Best Alternatives to Takomo 201 MKII Irons
These irons have very similar performance – which happens to be excellent. Your choice will come down to personal preference for cosmetics, sound and feel, and price.
Mizuno JPX 925 Hot Metal Pro irons – Always exceptional performance from the JPX line from Mizuno. Plus, the best sound and feel in the game.
2025 Taylormade P790 irons – P790s get better with every single iteration. The 2025 version are just a bit more refined all around, plus they’ve taken already great cosmetics up a notch.
Callaway Apex Ai200 irons – My surprise hits of 2025. They were magic in my hands and lacked in nothing on the course. I loved my time with the Ai200s.
