Performance Review

Looks: (B) Love the head shape. Love the compact size. Attractive clubs.

Sound & Feel: (B) Soft and solid.

Distance: (A) They’re true to their lofts with the ability to get more yardage if needed and to take off yardage if needed.

Forgiveness: (B) They’re right where they should be. They aren’t meant to be overly forgiving, and they aren’t. But they don’t punish you for minor mishits, either.

Flight / Playability: (A) This is why you get them. You can play any shot in your arsenal. Left to right, right to left, flight them down, whatever.

Value: (A) ~$200/club. Pretty much what you expect for premium irons these days.

My Experience with the New P770s

They played and performed pretty much exactly as I expected they would. They remind me a lot of the P7MCs I tested last year, only a touch more forgiving.

Center contact and a good swing got great results, and anything less gets punished appropriately, but not harshly.

They’re the same loft as my everyday set and I got similar distances.

I got my normal high launch and trajectory for the most part. Not unlike the P7MCs, my swing has to be disciplined to realize the true benefits of these clubs.

Bottom line: These are player irons designed for better ball strikers. They do exactly what they say they will do. All you can ask.

Who are the P7CBs irons for?

Low handicaps: (Yesss) Great irons for the better ball-striking low handicap. Nothing not to like.
Mid handicaps: (Nope) The P770s, P790s, or Qi irons are more your speed
High handicaps: (Nooo) Get thee to the TaylorMade Qi irons. They’re made just for you.

Potential Alternatives

Titleist 620 CB irons — Stellar performance, feel, and looks. They’ve been around awhile, but they’re still one of the best.

Srixon ZX7 MKII Irons – Stellar looks, performance, and feel with even more forgiveness, at a great price.

Mizuno Pro 243 irons – Excellent player irons with great feel.

Final Verdict

TaylorMade P7CB irons hit their mark.

• Accurate and consistent.
• Good sound and feel.
• Attractive compact (but not too compact) clubheads.
• Good launch and trajectory.
• Excellent playability.

All the player attributes with a touch more forgiveness.

As usual…

My #1 suggestion is to get your hands on them before you buy. Either at your local golf store or take advantage of Global Golf’s Utry trial program. I use it and recommend it.
