This is Golfer Geeks’ Cobra SNAKEBITE Wedge review.

I’m a teaching pro & scratch golfer who has played golf for 30 years. I’m always looking to improve my game, even if it’s just a shot or two here and there. I love testing new strategies both on and off the course and studying golf swings to see what actually works.

I’ve got 2 rounds, 4 hours on the range, and one session on a Foresight GC3 launch monitor with the Cobra SNAKEBITE Wedge.

Summary: The Cobra SNAKEBITE wedge offers full face grooves (56 degrees and up), some of the sharpest on the market, shot versatility, and a progressive design from the 48-degree loft to the 60. If you are looking for a wedge you can manipulate that still incorporates a bit of the Cobra forgiveness, this is it.

In this review of the Cobra SNAKEBITE wedge, I discuss my experience with the club, its unique features, and benefits, as well as launch monitor data, customer reviews, and potential alternatives.

Overview

Cobra Snakebite Wedge Face

If you are like me, when you think of modern Cobra golf clubs, you probably think of forgiveness and adjustability. However, I still remember the days when Cobra blade irons felt just as good as Titleist.

I hoped Cobra would channel some of their Acushnet days and bring that buttery feel back in the SNAKEBITE wedges.

They didn’t.

But you’ll find the CNC-milled grooves in SNAKEBITE wedges are some of the sharpest and deepest in the game. In addition, if you like to be creative around the greens, the SNAKEBITE will be there to support you.

Translation- If you want BITE and to be a shot maker around the greens, the Cobra SNAKEBITE wedge has what you need. When you mix in Cobra Connect, you can track your improvement..

Why Consider the SNAKEBITE

One of the things I’ve noticed when trying to find wedges that offer just a bit more forgiveness is that they lose spin.

The SNAKEBITE has high levels of spin (on the full-swing shots) and still allows you to hit the ball anywhere near the center with good results..

I also like that Cobra didn’t go overboard with the forgiveness. This is a wedge that lower handicap players can use to shape shots and be quite aggressive around the greens, it just has your back on those full-swing shots.

I like the Cobra SNAKEBITE for players who like to open their clubface around the greens. If you hit that same stock 56-degree shot with your wedges every time, this may not be the technology you need.

The main benefits of the Cobra SNAKEBITE wedge are:

  • Clean-looking clubhead with three easy to choose from grind options
  • The new notch design allows the leading edge to sit flush even when the clubface is open
  • High spin rates on the full swing approach shots to the green
  • New groove technology provides sharper and deeper grooves for better spin from a variety of locations around the green

Cobra SNAKEBITE Specs and Loft Options

Cobra Snakebit Wedge in the bag

I love the simplicity of the loft and grind options from Cobra. Where Titleist will have you feeling like you are choosing a health care plan, Cobra keeps it simple. If you like the SNAKEBITE, there are plenty of choices here for your game.

  • 2 finish options: Chrome, Black
  • Loft options: Ranging from 48 to 60 degrees
  • Grind options: Versatile (medium/firm turf conditions), Widelow (soft/medium), Classic (soft/medium/firm)

My Experience with the Cobra SNAKEBITE

I started my testing session by hitting shots on the Foresight GC3 launch monitor. I’ve never owned a Cobra wedge and I wanted to see how the SNAKEBITE compares to other wedges I’ve tested from a spin standpoint.

Spin on the full swing shots with this 56 degree wedge was quite good. I got anywhere from 8300-9400 rpm on a 90-yard shot. (Only, Callaway Jaws and Titleist Vokey were higher) Distance from these wedges was fine, comparable to other wedges on the market.

I was impressed by spin rates from the first few half-swing shots – they were in the 7000 rpm range. However, I quickly noticed that spin rates in this range varied considerably.

I expected a bit more consistency hitting off a mat and using the same golf ball (and pretty close to the same swing) Instead, spin rates were in the 5000-7000 rpm range.

Is this a problem? Yup.

You need consistent spin rates from your wedges to learn how your golf ball responds when it lands, which makes distance control considerably easier. I like consistency in spin rates, and I didn’t find that with the SNAKEBITE.

When I took the SNAKEBITE out on the course, the overall feel and feedback were quite good. I’ll admit I don’t love looking at the full-face grooves on full-swing shots. I find it harder to zero in on the sweet spot.

However, around the greens, the full face is a nice benefit. With the shorter shots, I’m not as worried about the sweet spot, more about solid contact and versatility, and the Cobra is good for that.

The feel with the SNAKEBITE is medium firm, nothing that would keep me away from the wedge or push me towards it. I like how the leading edge sits on the turf; it gives you that feeling that you can clip the ball cleanly. (You know what I mean.)

Review of the Cobra SNAKEBITE Wedges

Cobra Snakebite Wedge

Looks: (A+) Excellent. Great looking club sits really nicely against the turf to help promote confidence and precision.

Sound/ Feel: (A) Overall, good sound and feel, a little harder coming off the face than some golfers may like.

Distance and Distance Control: (B+) More consistent spin rates would make this an “A”. It would take a little while to get your exact distances down.

Forgiveness: (A) Enough built-in forgiveness to make this one a good choice for the mid handicappers

Spin: (A) High spin rates on the full swing shots; the deeper grooves are an impressive addition to the Cobra SNAKEBITE technology.

Consistency: (B) Not the most consistent spin rates, better on the full swing shots, gets progressively worse as you slow the speed down.

Value: (B+) Not the cheapest wedge on the market, offers good technology, but there may be better deals out there to consider.

Customer Reviews

The customer reviews were almost all positive for the Cobra SNAKEBITE wedges.

Some comments I saw were:

  • “Incredible club from the bunkers.”
  • “The BITE technology really works to stop the ball and encourage greater spin.”
  • “Pricing is fair if you need to replace more than one wedge in your bag at a time.”
  • “The notch technology works to set the club up perfectly with the turf and encourage cleaner contact even out of the rough.”

Who are the Cobra SNAKEBITE wedges for?

Low handicap: (Yes) The look and feel of the Cobra SNAKEBITE is good enough to keep the better players happy. (Rickie Fowler has them in the bag- need we say more.)

Mid handicap: (Absolutely) Mid handicappers will love the versatility and overall shot-making ability, especially with the higher lofted full face.

High handicap: (Yes) I think Cobra covered the entire market here, and even high handicappers can benefit from the technology.

Our Verdict

The Cobra SNAKEBITE is a tour-proven wedge with impressive spin rates, unique shot-making ability, and a tiny notch in the sole that works to improve turf interaction.

I like the Cobra SNAKEBITE wedges; I think they blend in nicely with a game-improvement set of irons. They don’t spin quite like a Vokey or Jaws wedge, but they certainly spin enough to be effective on the course and get you closer to the pin.

Our #1 suggestion is to get your hands on it before you buy. Either at your local golf store or use Global Golf’s Utry trial program. I use it and recommend it.
