This is our review of the best TaylorMade irons for high handicappers, mid handicappers, and low handicappers in 2025.

I’m an avid golfer, a 7.8 handicap on my way to a 2 (been a 5.6), and frequent tester of golf clubs and equipment since 2015.

I’ve had the pleasure of practicing and playing with every club you see on this page.

In this review of TaylorMade irons, I discuss my experience with the clubs, unique features and benefits, as well as customer reviews and potential alternatives.

The new 2024 P770s are our favorite TaylorMade player performance irons.

  • We think you need to be at least a 10-handicap or so to play them.

What we like:

  • Best looking irons of the bunch.
  • Superb feel – soft and solid at impact.
  • Launch the ball quickly with high trajectory.
  • Ample forgiveness and distance.
  • Easy to flight the ball down, take off distance, and work the ball.

What we don’t like:

  • Distance gap 5ish yards more than I like between 8 and 7-iron.

I tested the P770s on the range, on the course, and on my launch monitor. I love everything about them.

The heads are compact, but not small. Performance is great out of the rough. The long irons are relatively easy to hit well – a particular weakness of mine.

They did everything well for me and covered for my temperamental swing on more than one occasion.

Customer Reviews: Average rating of 5 with 11 reviews so far. 100% would recommend the 2024 P-770s.

Recommendation: Great choice for the lowish handicapper looking for more forgiveness and a little help with launch and distance.

The P7CBs are a more forgiving P7MCs I tested last year. (Also on this list)

We like them for 5ish handicaps and lower.

What we like:

  • Good sound & feel.
  • Good looking compact clubheads – but not intimidating.
  • High launch and trajectory with good contact and a splash of forgiveness.
  • Not punishing on mishits.
  • Distance true to their loft and consistent.
  • Accurate & consistent.
  • Can play all the shots.

What we don’t like:

  • Nada – TaylorMade hit their mark.

I played one round and had two range sessions with the P7CBs. I swung much better for the 2nd session and got to experience more of what they are about.

I got out pretty much exactly what I put in. Good contact got me the distance, direction, and shape I was looking for. Minor mishits got most of that with a little loss of distance. Exactly what I/you expect.

These are player irons with a little added forgiveness. A nicer version of the P7MCs.

Bottom line: TaylorMade hit their mark with the P7CBs. Great performance and feel on good contact with appropriate results with minor mishits.

Recommendation: Great iron for better ball strikers. They do all the things.

The 2023 P790s are our pick for players needing game improvement features but want to look down at a “player” type club head.

What we like:

  • Long & forgiving.
  • Good distance and forgiveness.
  • Good sound and feel.

What we don’t like:

  • Pricey

The 790s are similar to the 770s in cosmetics and also have great sound and feel, but they:

  • Have larger club heads.
  • Stronger lofts.
  • Are more forgiving.

I found them playable with consistent distance for great accuracy. I consistently hit shots at my target during my round with the P790s.

The long irons are especially nice to hit – even though long irons are a weakness of mine.

Customer Reviews: Average rating of 4.8 with 1448 reviews. 96.75% would recommend the P-790s.

Recommendation: We like them for ~10 handicaps on up to a 15 or so. But, can be played by lower handicaps too.

P770s are our favorite TaylorMade player performance irons.

  • We recommend them for strong ball striking mid handicaps – say an 11 or so – on down to low handicaps that like added forgiveness in their player irons.

What we like:

  • Stellar performance in a compact “player” package.
  • Superb feel and solid at impact.
  • They’re gorgeous. Look great behind the ball at address and in the bag.

What we don’t like:

  • nada

I spent a couple of weeks with the P-770s. On the range, on my mat, and on the course. My only regret was returning them.

They can deliver any shot your skill level allows. High and straight is their default, but you can:

  • Flight them down into the wind.
  • Step on them for more distance.
  • Take something off if you’re between clubs.
  • Turn it left or right if that’s part of your game.

I’ve said it before on this site, but Taylormade knows how to do irons.

Customer Reviews: Average rating of 4.9 with 182 200 reviews. 100% (81 of 81) would recommend the P-770s.

Recommendation: Excellent choice for ~11 handicaps on down that prefer compact clubheads and player performance with a touch of game improvement forgiveness & help with distance.

The P-7MCs are our pick for TaylorMade irons for scratch to about a 4 handicap.

What we like: (Everything I’m saying requires great contact from a good swing.)

  • Solid & soft feel.
  • Fly straight and high, but can easily be flighted down when needed.
  • Shaping shots left or right if that’s part of your game.
  • Just a smidge of forgiveness.

What we don’t like:

  • Nada – they hit their mark.

Why? They require consistent center contact and a good swing or you lose beaucoup performance.

I’m able to play them…just barely. But, I have to be on my best behavior and I can’t keep that up for long. At least not this early in the season. I could play up to a 7-iron pretty consistently. I’m asking for trouble if tried to play every day with 6-iron on down.

Make center contact and they sing. Long and high with a tight draw for me. Slight misses cost you distance right away.

They do exactly what they’re designed to do and they’re money in the right player’s hands.

Customer Reviews: Average rating of 4.9 with 83 reviews. 93.94% (31 of 33) would recommend the P-7MCs.

Recommendation: For consistently great ball strikers. The rest of us may want them…but we should pick more forgiving irons.

P-7MBs are our pick for tour pros and scratch golfers with great ball striking. (I know some of you will buy them anyway)

What we like:

  • Solid & soft feel – same as the MCs
  • Fly straight and high, but can easily be flighted down when needed.
  • Shaping shots left or right if that’s part of your game.
  • Just a smidge complete lack of forgiveness.

What we don’t like:

  • Nada – they hit their mark.

Why? They require consistent center contact and a good swing or you lose beaucoup all performance – pretty much.

Even tour pros I found that play the MBs switch out the long irons for the MCs or the P-770s.

I cannot play these irons and no one I personally know can/should play these irons. These are for Tiger Woods & Adam Scott.

They are absolute jewels in the bag and at address (along with a heavy dose of intimidation in the mid and long irons).

But, don’t be tempted. You need to be legit scratch with legit elite ball striking. You can’t even just be scratch.

Like the P-7MCs, make center contact and they sing. Long and high with a tight draw for me. Slight misses yield bad results.

They’re gorgeous and do exactly what they’re designed to do. They’re money in the right player’s hands. (scratch or better)

Customer Reviews: Average rating of 4.9 with 51 reviews. 96% (22 of 23) would recommend the P-7MBs.

Recommendation: For Tiger Woods & Adam Scott. Maybe Rory McIlroy.

The Qi irons are a solid choice for the average mid-handicapper and deliver exactly what you want and expect from game improvement irons in this category.

What we like:

  • Good distance and forgiveness across the face.(little to no loss of distance with strikes towards the toe)
  • Well-struck shots elevate the ball well.
  • Sound and feel are a little “clicky”, but good overall.

What we don’t like:

  • Looks are more refined than the Stealths, but they are still lacking.
  • Not a big improvement over recent Taylormade game improvement models.

I’m well familiar with Taylormade game improvement irons and Taylormade irons overall. I expected good results from the Qi irons, and that’s what I got.

I tested the Qi Combo Set because I wanted to try the new Qi10 hybrids too. (Love them)

The lofts are quite strong – up to 5 degrees stronger than my everyday set. But, you can still launch the ball with quality contact. I was able to hit them high, low, and in between when I needed too.

Low ball hitters should test these before you put your money down.

Conclusion: Solid game improvement irons. I’d be surprised if you’re disappointed in their performance.

Recommendation: Certainly worthy of testing if you’re in the market.

We recommend the Stealths for 10 handicaps up to better high handicaps.

They’re Taylormade‘s most forgiving irons and most popular irons…by far. Figures, because most golfers need game improvement irons.

They’ve got all the game improvement features mid and high handicaps need, but are still playable once your game improves.

  • You can hit ’em high.
  • You can flight them down.
  • You can shape them.

Customer Reviews: Average rating of 4.8 with 1034 reviews. 99% (367 of 369) would recommend the Stealths.

Recommendation: Need to be on your shortlist if you’re in the market for new game improvement irons.

Final Verdict

My favorite TaylorMades I’ve tested are the 2024 P-770s. They’re gorgeous, compact, completely playable for good ball strikers, and fun to hit.

I enjoyed the P-7MCs too, but they’re more work than I currently want.
The P-7MBs are exactly what Taylormade says they are. Weapons for elite ball strikers.

My #1 suggestion is to test before you buy. Either at your local golf store or take advantage of Global Golf’s Utry trial program. I use it and recommend it.
