This is Golfer Geeks’ Takomo 101 MKII irons review.
I’m an avid golfer, 6ish handicap (on my way to a 2), and frequent tester of golf gear since 2015.
Quick Take: Takomo 101 MKII irons are a pure pleasure for this single-digit handicapper to play.
- Among the best sound and feel in the game improvement category.
- Launch high with plenty of distance. You can – when your skill allows – flight them lower too.
- Ample forgiveness and plenty of playability.
- Bargain-basement pricing makes them a steal.
These irons are a no brainer if you’re new to the game or a high handicapper and – in any way – budget minded.
Well done, Takomo.

Verdict
All you want from your beginner or high handicapper game improvement iron. I especially like them for those new to golf because you get so much value at such a low price.
They perform with the best in the category. Their sound and feel is better than most with no game improvement “click.”
The heads are generous and confidence-inspiring at address. Perfect for the new golfer.

Almost mandatory you try these if you’re in the market.

Looks | 4.5 |

Distance | 4.5 |
Forgiveness | 5 |
Flight/Playability | 5 |
Value | 5 |
Bag Appeal:ย (4)ย Clubheads aren’t long from heel to to, but they are meaty and substantial. Maybe even a little compact for this category. But, don’t get me wrong, they look plenty forgiving.
Topline is medium thickness. Soles Are thick. Gorgeous clubs. Minimal and sleek design. The heads are compact, but not intimidating.
Sound/ Feel: (4.5) Very nice. Soft and solid. Zero game improvement “click.” Puts them among the best in the game improvement category.
Forgiveness: (5) Plenty. Center contact is great, but you get a lot out of slight misses. I hit a number of toe and toe/thin shots and ended up a halfish club short.
Distance: (4) All the help with distance you expect. Lofts are generally about 3-4 degrees stronger than what I consider standard.
Flight / Launch:ย (5)ย Default high, but can easily flight them down. You can even do some shaping once your game is there.
Value: (5+)ย Outstanding. ~$83/club – KILLER.
My Experience with the 101 MKIIs

I know these clubs well at this point.
I consider 101 MKIIs prototype beginner or high handicapper irons. Especially for those brand new to golf.
You won’t spend a lot of money.
You get premium irons and premium performance.
You get irons that will easily take you deep into the mid handicap range and even into single digits if you so chose.
I got around the course just find with a lot of mediocre contact from mediocre swings. This is where they save you.
I got 80% to 90% out of my shots on most of these occasions. I managed to hit a few on the button with solid swings and got to experience all they do with launch and extra distance too.
I wouldn’t even know these are game improvement irons by their sound and feel. They’ve got definite player characteristics for when you’re ready.
Bottom line: The 101 MKIIs have to be on your radar if you’re new to the game or need help with launch, distance, and forgiveness.
Who Should Play Takomo 101 MKII Irons?

Beginners and high to mid handicap golfers. Or, any golfer who wants to just point and shoot at flags.
Low handicaps (No): You can, but you won’t. You’ll be better served by the 201T MKIIs. Or, even the 201 MKIIs.
Mid handicaps (Yes): You can definitely play these. Once you get around a 10, see the above two options.
High handicaps (Yessss): 100% you need to take a look at these irons. Run, don’t walk.
Best Alternatives to Takomo 101 MKII Irons
These irons have very similar performance – which happens to be excellent. Your choice will come down to personal preference for cosmetics, sound and feel, and price.
Mizuno JPX 925 Hot Metal irons – Exceptional performance. The best sound and feel in golf. Decent pricing too.
Cobra DS-Adapt irons – VERY underrated irons. Great performance. Great sound and feel. Equally great price.
Callaway Apex Ai300 irons – I found these irons to be exceptional. Especially out of the rough. They are in the upper price range for the category. My only knock on them.

Final Verdict
Takoma 101 MKIIs do everything you want your game improvement iron to do, and at a great price:
- Tons of forgiveness and help with distance.
- Generous clubheads scream “forgiving” as you look down on them at address. (Player iron looks)
- They launch the ball reasonably well. Lofts are strong, as you would expect. So, be cautious if you have a lot of trouble getting the ball airborne.
- Much better sound and feel than you typically get in the game improvement iron category.
They are a solid set of irons at any price. Throw in the fact that they’re 40% or more cheaper than major brands, and you approach no-brainer territory.
