This is Golfer Geeks comparison of the Orange Whip vs Lag Shot golf swing trainers

I’m an avid golfer, a 9.2 6.7 handicap on my way to a 2 (been a 5.6) and frequent tester of golf clubs and equipment since 2015.

I’m a large fan of training aids as you can tell by looking around this site. I see them as tools and I believe in taking advantage of them to improve my golf game. (You can see the ones I consistently use here)

The Orange Whip is the best pure tempo, sequence, and rhythm trainer. (It’s obviously great for warming up your muscles before a round or range session too. Is this all you’re looking for? Then, you can’t do better.

The Lag Shot does all of the above well, but I think it’s more effective at effecting swing changes because you hit balls with it. It makes what you feel, real.

In this article, I’m going to give you my take on the benefits and advantages of the Orange Whip and Lag Shot swing training aids

Orange Whip Trainer at a Glance

Orange Whip trainers are the most popular tempo trainers on the market and are designed to help with tempo, rhythm, sequence, and timing.

They help with lag too, but they don’t push this benefit. They are specifically made – according to their creator –  without a clubhead so you can forget about clubhead position and focus on your swing.

The original Orange Whip Trainer is the longest and heaviest of the Orange Whips and simulates your swing motion with a driver. (It’s the one you see sticking out of bags at your local range and in the bags of tour pros most often)

Orange Whip training clubs:

  • Orange Whip Trainer
  • Orange Whip Compact
  • Orange Whip Mid-Size
  • Orange Whip Junior

Orange Whip trainers are best used for:

  1. Warm up before a round or range session (what golfers use them for 99.999999% of the time)
  2. To get you to swing in the correct sequence, which solves MANY swing flaws.
  3. Slow down your transition and teach you to gather swing speed the right way and apply it at the right time (Timing)
  4. Help you load and unload the club naturally for increased power & distance (Lag)

Verdict

Orange Whip trainers are probably the best pure swing sequence and tempo trainers on the market. Don’t see how you could go wrong picking one up if this is all you’re looking for.

Lag Shot Golf Swing Trainers at a Glance

Lag Shot trainers are also popular and came on the market about 2 years ago. You’ll see them featured in ads on YouTube, in major golf magazines, and on the Golf Channel occasionally.

They offer the same benefits as Orange Whip trainers – improved tempo, lag, rhythm, sequence, and timing. But, you can hit balls with every club.

Many golfers (calling out my buddies, here) don’t like them because they are hard to hit. But, they are supposed to be hard to hit.

Sloppy swings get punished and good swings get rewarded.

You have to swing on a good enough swing plane and swing path, and have a square to closed clubface at impact. Or, you’ll hit nasty slices all day.

This is where Lag Shot separates itself from all other tempo trainers. Instant Feedback.

  • You HAVE to start your swing in one piece, swing back on plane, transition smoothly, and swing down on plane and on the right path to hit the ball solid. Get careless or sloppy at any point and you are in for pain.

I own the 7-iron, driver and wedge. I find them all helpful, but the driver was particularly helpful with my driving.

  5. Nailing a better golf swing through impact and follow-through.

Verdict

The Lag Shot is a more complete training aid. There’s no substitute for being able to hit balls.

Orange Whip vs Lag Shot: Conclusion

So, which one should you get?

Depends on your priority and exactly what you’re trying to accomplish.

Just want a heavy swing trainer to get your muscles stretched and warm before a round. And, want to ingrain smoother tempo pre-round or practice. Orange Whip is probably the better choice.

Want to do everything the Orange Whip does +  groove a more technically correct swing?

Gotta be the Lag Shot.

Thanks for checking out my Orange Whip vs Lag Shot comparison. These are both fine tools you’ll get many years of use from no matter which you choose.
