This is Golfer Geeks’ PING G440 Max driver vs G440 SFT driver comparison.

I’ve had both of these drivers on the range and on the course and I’m a fan of both.

Summary: The G440 Max is the better all-around driver because it covers up for your left and right misses and it gives you greater flexibility for your shot shape.

That said, the G440 SFT fulfills it’s job very well. It works overtime to correct your pushes and minor slices.

They’re both long, they both have generous sweet spots, and they both launch the ball well.

The G440 Max is Ping’s most forgiving driver in the G440 series.

It’s made for mid to high launch, has a shallow face, and adjustable sole weight, and increased distance across the face.

Though it’s meant as more of a game improvement driver, I think it will work for any golfer, regardless of handicap, who is just looking for more playable drives.

I could put the G440 Max in play today.

It checks every box I look for in a driver. Solid cosmetics. Great profile. Works to keep me playable. Plenty of distance away from the sweet spot. Premium sound and feel.

Best For

Golfers that need to minimize or neutralize right sided misses – either pushes or slices.

Considerations

Elite drivers may want a driver with lower spin and lower launch.

Verdict

The G440 SFT does exactly what it’s designed to doโ€”turn pushes and slices into playable shots. On a day when I was spraying drives all over, this driver kept bringing them back into the short grass.

If you fight a consistent left-to-right ball flight, the SFT’s draw bias could be your answer.

The internal weighting actively works to draw your ball. That said, I hit a number of fairway-finding baby fades…not on purpose, of course.

If you hit the ball straight or already draw it, you should likely skip the G440 SFT.

It’s is purpose-built for golfers with a specific problem.

If you’re tired of watching drives leak right into trouble, the Ping G440 SFT might be exactly what you need.

Unlike the G440 Max, which spreads forgiveness everywhere, the SFT takes a laser-focused approach to one specific problem: correcting pushes and slices.

That said:

The magic happens through Ping’s internal weighting and geometry. Built-in draw bias actively works to turn your typical left-to-right misses into playable shots.

The rear weight positioning promotes right-to-left ball flight naturallyโ€”hit it clean and you’ll see a slight draw, miss with your usual push or fade and the SFT brings it back toward the target.

Want more correction? The adjustable sole weight has a “draw +” setting supposedly adds about twice the right-to-left potential.

During my testing, even on a day when I was pushing drives all over, the SFT consistently rescued wayward shots.

Instead of drifting into trouble, pushed drives came back to the fairway or manageable rough. Averaged 276 yards while staying playableโ€”not bad for an off day.

Like the G440 Max, it’s Ping’s best-looking driver yet. The ever present turbulators are there, but the carbon crown weave and blue sole accents give it a premium feel that surpasses the G430 and G425 generations.

Sound and feel remind me of my G425 testingโ€”springy and a little hallow.

Unlike the Max, the SFT is built for a specific miss. So, it lacks the all-around forgiveness of the G440 Max.

I think you have better options if you’ve got multiple ways to mishit drives.

Bag Appeal โ€“ Draw

Of course.

Sound & Feel โ€“ G440 Max

They’re the same if you hit the sweet spot. The G440 sounds and feels more solid when you miss it.

Distance โ€“ Draw

My swing speed when I tested the SFT on the range by about 3 mph on average, so I got about 5 more yards. I was longer on the course with the Max.

Forgiveness โ€“ G440 Max

The G440 Max corrects a two-way miss and did well with my pushes and small slices. The SFT isn’t that far behind, but it is behind.

Ball Flight โ€“ Max

I prefer the way the ball came off the Max’s face during my round. I did get a higher ball flight on the range with the SFT. But, I prefer what I see with my premium golf balls when on the course as the test for ball flight.

Final Verdict

The Ping G440 Max and G440 SFT both hit their mark and do what Ping says they should do.

Plus:

  • They’ve got premium cosmetics.
  • They’re the same price.
  • They’re both launch the ball well and have more than enough distance.

I’m picking the G440 Max because I’ve got a nice two-way miss more often than I’d like.

I recommend the G440 SFT if your primary concern is pushing or small and medium slices.

Choose the G440 Max if:

  • All around forgiveness is your main concern.

Choose the G440 SFT if:

  • You’re trying to eliminate or neutralize pushes and small and medium slices.

As always, my #1 suggestion is to:

  • Test before you buy.
