Ping G425 Max Driver Review

This is Golfer Geeks’ review of the Ping G425 Max driver.

I’m an avid golfer, a 9.2 handicap on my way to a 2 (been a 5.6) and frequent tester of golf clubs and equipment since 2015.

I tested the G425 Max driver during two range sessions and one round of golf.

Summary – The Ping G425 Max driver is long, forgiving and easy to keep in play. It covered for my marginal swings and gave me more and better shots into the green than I deserved. It’s a great driver for great drivers or mediocre drivers (like myself).

Ping G425 Max Driver Overview & Why you should Consider it.

The Max is Ping’s highest MOI driver in their lineup. I just think “easier to hit” when talking about high MOI. And, the G425 Max was certainly that. It’s got a 26g adjustable weight in the sole for a neutral, draw, or fade bias.  

The G425 Max driver is as long and forgiving as any driver on the market. It’ll keep all but your worst swings in play and is the best friend your iron game could have. It should at least be on your list to test if you’re in the market.   

G425 Max Features and Benefits

1) Highest MOI

• The addition of the movable 26g weight to the rear of the sole gives the G425 Max the highest MOI in the Ping lineup for more forgiveness and an easier time launching drivers higher.

2) Internal Dragonfly

• Allowed for added weight savings which could be moved around the head and to the back weight for better MOI, and improved CG for more forgiveness and distance.

3) Precision Forged Face

• Proprietary forged face allows for more flexing which means more ball speed and distance

4) Aerodynamic Design

• Newly refined turbulators decrease aerodynamic drag for easier speed

5) Internal Ribbing

• Reinforce key sections of the head for better sound and feel. 

Testing the Ping G425 Max Driver

• 2 range sessions – I hit around 10-15 drives per session and swung the Lag Shot Driver in between drives to help my tempo and timing. 
• 1 round on the course

My Experience with the Ping G425 Max Driver

I hit an absolutely beautiful mid-trajectory draw with the first swing of the G425 Max driver. It’s forgiving. It is long and it even sounds long. 

This is a gamer for mediocre drivers of the golf ball (like me). I hit a bunch of good drives during my round and on the range. I knew instantly I could put this in my bag and play it today. 

I didn’t have to work at hitting good drives. Put a good-enough swing on it and you’re golden. 

As you can see from the chart below, I wasn’t exactly wearing out the sweet spot. A smash factor of 1.43 is mediocre for anyone. Still, I got better carry numbers than I deserved at an average of 269 yards.

Review of the Ping G425 Max Driver

Looks (B) 

There’s certainly nothing flashy about the G425 Max driver. It’s got kind of an “industrial” look to it – all business. Colors are shades of black, grey, and silver. It sets up great behind the ball at address and I’ve got no problem with the non-premium design.

Sound & Feel (A)

The face feels “springy”, kind of like a trampoline effect at impact (which I loved). Muted, slightly hollow sound. The ball sounds like it’s going to go far. 

Distance: (A+)

As long as any. Hit it on the button and it goes forever. Miss the button a little bit, and it goes a little less than forever.

Forgiveness: A+

Excellent.  

Flight / Playability: A

Semi-high penetrating draw with decent swing and contact. Semi-high push or hook with less good swings.

Who’s the G425 Max driver for?

Low handicaps (Yes) – Will work great for you unless you have elite swing speed and require lower spin from your driver. The LST model may serve you better. 
Mid handicaps (YES) – Excellent choice for you. It works hard to keep you playable off the tee and give a LOT of help with distance. 
High handicaps (YES) – See above.

Our Verdict on the Ping G425 Max Driver

The G425 Max is an outstanding driver for any golfer, especially with golfers having issues off the tee. 

My #1 suggestion is to test before you buy. Either at your local golf store or take advantage of Global Golf’s Utry trial program. I use it and recommend it.
