Spornia Golf Net Review – SPG-8 Edition

This is our Spornia golf net review – SPG-8 X-large version.

I’m an avid golfer, an 8ish handicap on my way to a 2 (been a 5.6), and frequent tester of golf clubs and equipment since 2015.

Summary: The Spornia SPG-8 is the best golf net I’ve seen for $500 or under. Its size, functionality, quality construction, and the ability to put it up and take it down to store it in 5 minutes or less set it waaay apart from the competition.

I’ve had and used the SPG-8 Spornia net for a couple of months.

In this review of the Spornia SPG-8 golf net, I discuss my experience with the net, its unique features and benefits, and my recommendations.

SPG-8 Overview & Features

Setting up & Taking Down the SPG-8

The SPG-8 is a large net that comes in a large carrying case, so there’s an intimidation factor from size alone. It’s also kinda hefty and awkward to carry around.

Do not be deterred…

This is me throwing the SPG8 up in under 5-minutes after not putting it up in a month or two. (Guarantee I could do it in about 2 minutes or so next time.)

It probably took me 5-7 minutes to get it up the first time and by FAR the biggest hassle is inserting the rod for the overhead hood. That being said, it ain’t that hard. Just standard annoying.

They use the collapsable rods common in golf nets and tents. I don’t like them and I would prefer rods that screwed into each other.

Anyway…

Taking your net down and storing it is surprisingly easy. Took me about 1-2 minutes the first time.

• Take out the rod for the hood – again, the hardest part.
• Remove the poles holding the net up.
• Fold it up per instructions.
• Put it in the bag it came in.

Using Your Spornia Golf Net

I keep my net about 10 feet or so from where I address the ball. I can confidently hit most clubs from there.

I may move closer to hit lofted wedges – my 56-degree sand wedge and 60-degree lob wedge. Also, the driver. Never know when a sky ball is coming.

I probably don’t need to for the driver, but I need the extra confidence to swing away.

Any ball hit into the black target sheet drops down and rolls to the front and inside of the net. Some balls roll over, but you can adjust the edges easily to make them higher and prevent this.

I’ve hit a few balls over the target sheet with a wedge (not easy to do, but doable) and the ball will bounce back toward you. Not enough to injure you are anything, but it will miss the ball capture feature built into the net.

Best Practices

I set mine up on the grass just off my back patio. It will kill your grass if you leave it there indefinitely, or for very long.

I slide it away from that spot to different spots in my yard when not in use to give the grass a break.

Take it down and put it away as often as you can for grass preservation and to keep the net out of the elements. At the end of every day, ideally.

I’m in Houston and we’re hitting triple-digit temps daily. Before that, high winds and constant rain. The net is tough, but few things are made to withstand those elements.

My Experience with the SPG-8

(My swing is consistently 5-10 mph slower hitting into my net vs the range – according to my Garmin R10.) I go into why I think that is below.

I usually use my launch monitor when I’m hitting into my net for testing or practice. I like to see ball flight and get an idea of distance. Along, with other things my Garmin R10 measures.

So, the net has to be a minimum distance away – about 10 feet. That’s potentially too far when hitting my most lofted wedges…or if I get a little steep or flippy with a wedge and send one skyward. Also, if I really sky a driver.

Note: I’ve never gone over the net with a wedge or with a skyed drive.

But…it’s on my mind. So, it affects my swing. That may just be me, though.

That being said, follow my solutions for your driver and wedge and you should have no issues.

SPG-8 Review

Effectiveness (A) It’s caught every shot I’ve thrown at it. Hit that target screen and the ball drops softly and silently straight down and rolls to your feet (the end of the net)

Quality (A) Solidly built with quality materials. Nothing appears, feels, or preforms as if it’s cheap. I haven’t had it long, but I can’t see durability being a problem. (Follow my instructions above so you get the best value out of it)

Looks (A) Not really a priority, but they matter. The Spornia looks as good as it performs.

Value (B+) $500 bucks (what the SPG-8 costs without my discount) is still a lot of money. The SPG-7 is cheaper and a great net, but I wanted the added confidence of a huge net.

Best Alternatives

Net Return nets are the current gold standard in golf nets and are priced accordingly. Their disadvantage is they don’t store as easily as Spornia nets.

Final Verdict

Spornia golf nets are a solid choice if you’re willing to spend a little more money for good quality, but don’t want to break the bank.
