Welcome to Golfer Geeks’ comparison of the Ping G440 irons vs G425 irons.
I’m a 7ish-handicap golfer chasing a 2 (been as low as 5.6), and I’ve been reviewing and testing golf equipment since 2015. If you’re looking for honest, hands-on feedback with no fluff, you’re in the right place.
Summary: Ping G440s and G425s deliver similar performance – launch, ball flight, forgiveness, distance, playability. I prefer G425 cosmetics and I think they have slightly better sound and feel.
- I don’t recommend upgrading if you own the G425s and are happy with them.
- The G425s are hard to find new and harder if you’re particular about your specs.
- G440s are a solid choice at a reasonable price.
In this comparison, I break down my testing of both sets—from looks and feel to forgiveness and playability—so you can confidently choose the right iron for your game.
Ping G440 Irons
Set Tested: 4–UW, Black Dot
Shaft: Ping AWT 3.0 Stiff Flex (Made by Nippon)
Why Consider the them?
The Ping G440 irons combine distance, forgiveness, and a clean look—ideal for mid-to-high handicappers.
A thinner, faster face boosts ball speed and distance, even on off-center hits. The PurFlex badge improves feel and sound.
They launch high and straight thanks to a low center of gravity and compact shaping. High MOI keeps dispersion tight and helps you hit more greens.

Ping G425 Irons
Set Tested: Wedge -4-iron Right Hand, Black Dot Standard
Shaft: True Temper Dynamic Gold 105 S300 Steel Stiff Flex
Why Consider the them?
The Ping G425 irons take everything good about the G400 and G410 lines and refine it further. They’re ultra-consistent, with a buttery smoother feel than their predecessors and excellent forgiveness baked in.
The G425s use a metal-wood-style face, which boosts ball speed and enhances launch. They also feature toe and hosel weighting for better MOI, keeping shots on target even when you don’t strike it pure.
These irons don’t reinvent the wheel—but they do polish it. If you want a modern, high-performing iron that just works, the G425s deliver.
- Improved feel over G400 and G410.
- Compact profile with great forgiveness.
- Clean, premium look.
- Excellent distance with high launch.
- Hard to find new, but great value used.

Some say they’re not quite as long as other modern distance irons, but the consistency and feel more than make up for it.
Key Differences

Looks – G425s
Both are good looking irons, but I have a sweet spot for minimal design and for the G425s in general.
Sound/Feel – G425s…slightly
No losers here, but the G425s were softer and more solid at impact. The G440s still feel good. On solid strikes, there’s a slight click—more noticeable the farther you miss the sweet spot. Still, they feel stable and responsive overall.
Distance – G440s…has to be
The G440s are about 1.5 degrees stronger through the set. That equates to 3-5 yards. Not much and not a difference maker for the high handicapper playing these irons.
Forgiveness – Draw
Both sets have generous sweet spots and cover for you nicely when your swing isn’t on. There may be some differences at the margins, but they’d be hard to pick out.
Launch/Flight – Draw
Both sets help with launch and high trajectory. You can shape them and flight them as needed.
The average high handicapper is never going to detect a difference in these clubs.
Value – G425s, if you can find them.
PGA Tour Superstore is the only store I found that still has new sets for for right handers & Global Golf still has some new sets for left handers.
G440s – ~$157/club
G425s – ~$114/club new
Final Verdict
Performance is neck and neck between Ping G440s and G425s.
Your issue is finding G425s, if they’re your choice.
- They’re both forgiving.
- They’re both long.
- They both launch the ball high.
- You can still play shots with either one if you have those skills.
Should you upgrade if you own the G425s?
Nope, you should not.
As always, my #1 suggestion is to test both sets before you buy. Either at your local shop or through Global Golf’s Utry program.
