Welcome to Golfer Geeks’ head-to-head comparison of the 2025 P790 irons vs 2023 P790 irons.

I’m a 7ish-handicap golfer chasing a 2 (been as low as 5.6), and I’ve been reviewing and testing golf equipment since 2015. If you’re looking for honest, hands-on feedback with no fluff, you’re in the right place.

Summary: The 2025 P790s and 2023 P790s are more similar than different.

  • Performance-wise, they’re neck and neck in distance, forgiveness, and ball flight.
  • The 2025s offer slightly improved sound & feel, and a more compact, refined look.

But unless cosmetics matter a lot to you, I wouldn’t upgrade if you already own the 2023s.

In this comparison, I break down my testing of both sets—from looks and feel to forgiveness and playability—so you can confidently choose the right iron for your game.

2025 Taylormade P790s

2025 Taylormade P790 irons set

Set Tested: 4-PW
Shaft: KBS Tour Lite Stiff Flex

Why Consider the them?

TaylorMade refined just about everything in the 2025 P790s—while keeping the performance DNA that made the line so popular.

They still offer the same explosive distance and reliable forgiveness. But now, you get a sleeker shape, improved feel, and a more consistent launch pattern throughout the set.

Key Tech Highlights:

  • 4340M forged face: 20% stronger than previous versions, boosting ball speed and sweet spot size
  • FLTD CG™: Progressive CG locations for better launch, spin, and distance gapping
  • SpeedFoam™ Air: Softens sound and feel while maintaining explosive face flex
  • Refined shaping: Thinner topline, shorter blade, and cleaner visuals at address

If you’re a scratch to a 10ish handicapper who wants a compact player-distance iron, the 2025s should be on your demo list.

Customer Reviews – What Others Are Saying

With 118 reviews in, the 2025s are averaging 4.8 stars with 98% of buyers recommending them.(1)

Here’s what they’re saying:

  • “Best P790s yet.” Multiple reviewers who’ve owned past generations say these are the most refined and best-looking.
  • “Forgiving and smooth.” Mid-handicappers love how well these recover on slight mishits.
  • “Premium look and feel.” Strong feedback on both sound and visual appeal.
  • “Added 20 yards per club.” Some switching from P7CBs or older P790s are seeing big gains

2023 Taylormade P790s

Set Tested: 4-PW
Shaft: True Temper Dynamic Gold 105 S300 (Stiff)

Why Consider the them?

The 2023 P790s are still an elite player distance iron—and they’re now a better value than ever.

TaylorMade’s goal here was refinement. You still get fast launch, forgiveness, and that soft forged feel—but in a sleeker, more compact profile than previous generations.

Why they’re still a great choice:

  • Player-friendly profile with forgiveness baked in
  • Clean, compact shaping—a step up from the 2021s
  • FLTD CG™ helps optimize launch and playability from long irons to wedges
  • SpeedFoam™ Air enhances sound and feel without sacrificing face flex

They’re long, high-launching, and easy to hit. If you’re around a 10 handicap or lower, these are still 100% worth your consideration.

Looks – 2025s

This is a battle between super models and only one can win. It’s the 2025s for me. More compact clubhead, plus upgraded cosmetics.

Sound/Feel – 2025s…probably

They both have a solid, dense feel with a slightly muted tone, but the 2025s have a little more of it, I think.

Distance – Draw (From my experience on the course)

They’re both long and they’re both consistent with the added distance. I didn’t track launch monitor data for irons when I tested the 2023s, but I recall my playing experience. I pulled the same clubs and got the same results.

Forgiveness – Draw

They’ll both cover for slight mishits, but really sing when you catch them. Again, I didn’t detect any difference .

Launch/Flight – Draw

Broken record time. They both launch high with the ability to flight and shape the ball at will.

Value – 2023 P790s

Of course. They’re two years old and appropriately discounted.

2025s – ~$200/club
2023s – ~$171/club

Final Verdict

If you already own the 2023 P790s, you don’t need to upgrade.

The 2025s look better and may feel a touch more refined—but that’s where the differences end.

What if you don’t own either?

Like the newest shiniest thing and don’t mind spending more?
Get the 2025s.

Want all the performance, great looking clubs, and appreciate a bargain?
Get the 2023s

As always, my #1 suggestion is to test both sets before you buy. Either at your local shop or through Global Golf’s Utry program.
