Welcome to Golfer Geeks’ head-to-head comparison of the 2025 P790 irons vs 2023 P790 irons.
Iโm a 7ish-handicap golfer chasing a 2 (been as low as 5.6), and Iโve been reviewing and testing golf equipment since 2015. If youโre looking for honest, hands-on feedback with no fluff, youโre in the right place.
Summary: The 2025 P790s and 2023 P790s are more similar than different.
- Performance-wise, theyโre neck and neck in distance, forgiveness, and ball flight.
- The 2025s offer slightly improved sound & feel, and a more compact, refined look.
But unless cosmetics matter a lot to you, I wouldnโt upgrade if you already own the 2023s.
In this comparison, I break down my testing of both setsโfrom looks and feel to forgiveness and playabilityโso you can confidently choose the right iron for your game.
What Are the Key Differences Between 2025 and 2023 P790 Irons?
The 2025 P790 irons feature several refinements over the 2023 model, though performance remains nearly identical. Here are the main differences:
Cosmetic and Aesthetic Improvements
- Finish:ย The 2025 model has a polished, satin finishโa departure from the matte finish of the 2023 version
- Look:ย Thinner top line and cleaner overall look, inspiring more confidence at address
- Feel:ย Individually optimized heads with improved internal stabilization for a softer, more consistent sound and feel throughout the set
- Sole:ย Wider sole with more camber, providing a more rounded design for improved turf interaction and forgiveness
Performance Enhancements
- Sweet Spot:ย The new 4340M face material increases the sweet spot by 24%, making the 2025 irons more forgiving on off-center hits
- Face Material:ย 20% stronger than the 2023 version, allowing for a thinner, faster face
- Distance:ย The combination of the faster face and FLTD CG (Flighted Center of Gravity) design helps generate slightly more carry distance with optimal launch and spin
- Consistency:ย Tighter manufacturing tolerances provide more consistent ball speed retention across the face
What Stays the Same
- Lofts (mostly identical)
- Overall forgiveness philosophy
- High launch characteristics
- Distance gapping
- Price point (~$200/club)

Why Consider the them?
The 2023 P790s are still an elite player distance ironโand theyโre now a better value than ever.
TaylorMadeโs goal here was refinement. You still get fast launch, forgiveness, and that soft forged feelโbut in a sleeker, more compact profile than previous generations.
Why they’re still a great choice:
- Player-friendly profile with forgiveness baked in
- Clean, compact shapingโa step up from the 2021s
- FLTD CGโข helps optimize launch and playability from long irons to wedges
- SpeedFoamโข Air enhances sound and feel without sacrificing face flex
Theyโre long, high-launching, and easy to hit. If youโre around a 10 handicap or lower, these are still 100% worth your consideration.

How Do the 2025 P790 Irons Look Compared to 2023? – 2025s
The 2025 P790s feature a more refined appearance with a thinner topline, cleaner shaping, and a polished satin finish compared to the 2023 model’s matte finish. The 2025s are more compact and inspire greater confidence at address.
This is a battle between super models and only one can win. It’s the 2025s for me.
Sound/Feel – 2025s…probably
They both have a solid, dense feel with a slightly muted tone, but the 2025s have a little more of it, I think.
Distance – Draw (From my experience on the course)
They’re both long and they’re both consistent with the added distance. I didn’t track launch monitor data for irons when I tested the 2023s, but I recall my playing experience. I pulled the same clubs and got the same results.
Forgiveness – Draw
They’ll both cover for slight mishits, but really sing when you catch them. Again, I didn’t detect any difference .
Launch/Flight – Draw
Broken record time. They both launch high with the ability to flight and shape the ball at will.
Value – 2023 P790s
Of course. They’re two years old and appropriately discounted.
2025s – ~$200/club
2023s – ~$171/club
Final Verdict
If you already own the 2023 P790s, you donโt need to upgrade.
The 2025s look better and may feel a touch more refinedโbut thatโs where the differences end.
What if you don’t own either?
Like the newest shiniest thing and don’t mind spending more?
Get the 2025s.
Want all the performance, great looking clubs, and appreciate a bargain?
Get the 2023s
As always, my #1 suggestion is to test both sets before you buy. Either at your local shop or through Global Golfโs Utry program.
