This is our review of the best
I’m an avid golfer, a 7.8 handicap on my way to a 2 (been a 5.6), and frequent tester of golf clubs and equipment since 2015.
I’ve had the pleasure of practicing and playing with every club you see on this page.

Taylormade Iron Reviews
Taylormade P770 Irons
- Good Distance, Forgiveness & Feel
- Flies High & Straight, but Workable
- Gorgeous
- None
P770s are our pick for best
They’ve got:
- Stellar performance in a compact “player” package.
- Superb feel and solid at impact.
- They’re gorgeous. Look great behind the ball at address and in the bag.
I spent a couple of weeks with the P-770s. On the range, on my mat, and on the course. My only regret was returning them.
They can deliver any shot your skill level allows. High and straight is their default, but you can:
- Flight them down into the wind.
- Step on them for more distance.
- Take something off if you’re between clubs.
- Turn it left or right if that’s part of your game.
I’ve said it before on this site, but
Customer Reviews: Average rating of 4.9 with 182 200 reviews. 100% (81 of 81) would recommend the P-770s.
Recommendation: Excellent choice for ~11 handicaps on down that prefer compact clubheads and player performance with a touch of game improvement forgiveness & help with distance.
2023 Taylormade P790 Irons
- Long & Forgiving
- Easy launch & high trajectory
- Good sound & feel
- Great looking
- Expensive
The 2023 P790s are our pick for the best
The 790s are similar to the 770s in cosmetics and also have great sound and feel, but they:
- Have larger club heads.
- Stronger lofts.
- Are more forgiving.
I found them playable with consistent distance for great accuracy. I consistently hit shots at my target during my round with the P790s.
The long irons are especially nice to hit – even though long irons are a weakness of mine.
Customer Reviews: Average rating of 4.8 with 1448 reviews. 96.75% would recommend the P-790s.
Recommendation: We like them for ~10 handicaps on up to a 15 or so. But, can be played by lower handicaps too.
Taylormade P-7MC Irons
- Solid Feel
- Accurate & Consistent
- Great Launch & Trajectory
- Player Looks & Profile
- None
The P-7MCs are our pick for the best
Why? They require consistent center contact and a good swing or you lose beaucoup performance.
That said, here’s what we like: (Everything I’m saying requires great contact from a good swing.)
- Solid & soft feel.
- Fly straight and high, but can easily be flighted down when needed.
- Shaping shots left or right if that’s part of your game.
- Just a smidge of forgiveness.
I’m able to play them…just barely. But, I have to be on my best behavior and I can’t keep that up for long. At least not this early in the season. I could play up to a 7-iron pretty consistently. I’m asking for trouble if tried to play every day with 6-iron on down.
Make center contact and they sing. Long and high with a tight draw for me. Slight misses cost you distance right away.
They do exactly what they’re designed to do and they’re money in the right player’s hands.
Customer Reviews: Average rating of 4.9 with 83 reviews. 93.94% (31 of 33) would recommend the P-7MCs.
Recommendation: For consistently great ball strikers. The rest of us may want them…but we should pick more forgiving irons.
Taylormade P-7MB Irons
- Good Feel
- Accurate & Consistent
- Great Launch & Trajectory
- Player Looks & Profile
- None
P-7MBs are our pick for the best
Why? They require consistent center contact and a good swing or you lose beaucoup all performance – pretty much.
- Even tour pros I found that play the MBs switch out the long irons for the MCs or the P-770s.
I think I hit 3 solid shots with them during my round. When I did, here’s what I found.
- Solid & soft feel – same as the MCs
- Fly straight and high, but can easily be flighted down when needed.
- Shaping shots left or right if that’s part of your game.
- Just a
smidgecomplete lack of forgiveness.
I can not play these irons and no one I personally know can/should play these irons. These are for Tiger Woods & Adam Scott.
They are absolute jewels in the bag and at address (along with a heavy dose of intimidation in the mid and long irons).
But, don’t be tempted. You need to be legit scratch with legit elite ball striking. You can’t even just be scratch.
Like the P-7MCs, make center contact and they sing. Long and high with a tight draw for me. Slight misses yield bad results.
They’re gorgeous and do exactly what they’re designed to do. They’re money in the right player’s hands. (0-3ish handicap)
Customer Reviews: Average rating of 4.9 with 51 reviews. 96% (22 of 23) would recommend the P-7MBs.
Recommendation: For Tiger Woods & Adam Scott. Maybe Rory McIlroy.
Taylormade Qi Irons
- Solid forgiveness & distance across the face
- Launch well w/ good trajectory
- Good sound and feel
- Looks...Ok, but not great
- Not a big improvement over recent Taylormade models
The Qi irons are a solid choice for the average mid-handicapper and deliver exactly what you want and expect from game improvement irons in this category.
What we like:
- Good distance and forgiveness across the face.(little to no loss of distance with strikes towards the toe)
- Well-struck shots elevate the ball well.
- Sound and feel are a little “clicky”, but good overall.
What we don’t like:
- Looks are more refined than the Stealths, but they are still lacking.
- Not a big improvement over recent
Taylormade game improvement models.
7-iron Launch Monitor Data
Club Speed | Ball Speed | Carry Distance | Vertical Launch | Peak Height | Descent Angle |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
82.6 | 113.6 | 168.3 | 13.2 * | 51ft | 29.2* |
I’m well familiar with
I tested the Qi Combo Set because I wanted to try the new Qi10 hybrids too. (Love them)
The lofts are quite strong – up to 5 degrees stronger than my everyday set. But, you can still launch the ball with quality contact. I was able to hit them high, low, and in between when I needed too.
Low ball hitters should test these before you put your money down.
Conclusion: Solid game improvement irons. I’d be surprised if you’re disappointed in their performance.
Recommendation: Certainly worthy of testing if you’re in the market.
Taylormade Stealth Irons
- Long & Forgiving
- Good Sound & Feel
- Elevates ball easily
- Easy to hit
- Looks...not the best
Stealths are our pick for the best
They’re
They’ve got all the game improvement features mid and high handicaps need, but are still playable once your game improves.
- You can hit ’em high.
- You can flight them down.
- You can shape them.
Customer Reviews: Average rating of 4.8 with 1034 reviews. 99% (367 of 369) would recommend the Stealths.
Recommendation: Need to be on your shortlist if you’re in the market for new game improvement irons.
Final Verdict
My favorite Taylormades I’ve tested are the P-770s. They’re gorgeous, compact, completely playable for good ball strikers, and fun to hit.
I enjoyed the P-7MCs too, but they’re more work than I currently want.
The P-7MBs are exactly what
My #1 suggestion is to test before you buy. Either at your local golf store or take advantage of Global Golf’s Utry trial program. I use it and recommend it.
