The name “Ben Hogan” is synonymous with precision, perfectionism, and exacting standards. The Ben Hogan golf clubs and the Ben Hogan Golf Company would certainly be no different.
Ben Hogan was born August 13, 1912, in Dublin, Texas. His parents were Chester and Clara Hogan. At the age of 8, in 1920, he and his family moved to Fort Worth, where he resided for the remainder of his life. He picked up golf a few years later by joining the caddy ranks at a local golf course, in the year 1924. He started playing golf professionally in 1932. His slow start and lack of success in the early days are well documented. It’s how he finished that’s the stuff of legend. 62 tournament victories and 9 majors, before he was done. He started Ben Hogan golf in 1953, about 18 years before his retirement.
Hogans were among the first clubs I played when I first started, at the age of 23, in 1993 or so. I thought they were fine, but Ping was the standard in good clubs for amateur hackers, and Callaway was just coming on the scene.
The Hogans were borrowed from my uncle, and at the same time I would routinely borrow a set of Ping Eye 2’s from a buddy of mine. I thought they were awesome, and just a little more forgiving than the Hogans- which I certainly needed.
Now we come to today. The Hogan brand is relaunched with some of the most beautiful clubs I’ve ever seen. The Ft. Worth irons are simply gorgeous, and the hybrids are knock-outs in and of themselves.
